No boring fitness
How to have more fun

by Lauren Muney

Is this you?

  • Completely bored with your current fitness regimen: your "routines" feel routine...
  • Dislike any exercise...
  • Tired of being told what you have to do to become fit - you don't like what the 'experts' suggest...
  • Want to have fun while staying active...
  • Want goals in your activity - not simply walking on a treadmill or lifting weights interminably...

Despite what most people believe, exercise, activity, and fitness does not have to be boring! Of course, if you are looking to lose fat, you must decrease the fat and increase muscle -- but to stay active and fit, there are so many possibilities to have fun. Start living your fitness again!

climbing for funThe United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that all people should put physical activity into their lives. That's just wonderful... but it's quite hard to live from a list.

When I (Lauren Muney of Physical Mind) coach a client for fitness and wellness, one of the first questions I ask is "What do you LIKE to do for activities?" It's important to match a client with his/her interests - fitness shouldn't be a drudgery, it should be something which invigorates.

Fitness does mean you have to work your muscles, work your lungs and blood capabilities, and stretch the ligaments which have compressed through days of work, but gone are the days when exercise needs to be torture. With so many options for activities, it's time to choose your own.

Life should be fun - and so should your fitness

Physical Mind has embarked on a quest to bring you examples of interesting "adventures" which are guaranteed to stretch your mind, muscles, and motivation. Life should be fun - and so should your fitness. These adventures often need no advance training - "train as you learn". Build your body, mind, and your spirit at the same time!

You don't have to do all of these: these amusements (some are more challenging than others) are offered to incite you and whet your appetite for more fun fitness. With those activities as examples, just remember there are tens, perhaps hundreds of other events to excite - and barely notice that you are exercising. Keep searching: maybe you'll fall in love with your perfect play.

Follow the quest for adventurous fitness which may change your body - and your life - forever. This fitness series is ongoing....

Change your mind. Change your body. Have fun and adventure doing both*

ADVENTUROUS FITNESS

Each article will describe the fitness benefits of the activity, thrill of the activity itself, plus information how to investigate more on your own.

"Ride and Tie" :
When your fitness equipment is a horse - and a hill
...the cross country trail-based relay race where your teammates are another person... and a horse.

"High Trek Adventure":
Your fitness equipment is a map of your city
A scavenger hunt in one of several cities across the United States, which has the 2-person teams solving puzzles and trivia while criss-crossing their city.
It's like those race games on television -- except you are participating, not just watching!

"Ride and Tie"
but no horse chow: (coming soon)
a similar cross country trail-based relay race where your teammates are another person... and a mountain bike. Tie your bike as if it were a pony! Ridem cowbike..?!

"Geo-caching": (coming soon)
Arrgh, mateys, there's booty abounding...
using a GPS device (a like an electronic compass which is guided by satellite) seek an actual 'treasure' left by a stranger. This is a great way to take a walk without even realizing you are exercising - the thrill of the chase takes over!

"Climbing": (coming soon)
Why settle for 'boring' weightlifting ever again?
Sweeping the adventure scene for decades, rock-climbing has been transformed to an ease and a challenge. With options including indoor 'climbing gyms', safety harnesses, and no prior experience necessary, this is a must-do for both old and young alike.

"Stair Racing": (coming soon)
This ain't your daddy's attic stairs
"Run stairs in my free time? Are you KIDDING?" No, there's no kidding and in fact, there are people across the world doing it - and having a blast! The method is easy - touch every stair. There are stair runs up the Sears Tower, Empire State Building, and even outdoor stair locations.
